The Problem With Diversity

Seems Apple can’t win for trying. People love it when they put someone of color and/or female on stage. But at the same time they keep getting hammered for lack of diversity.

Here’s the thing though. Diversity needs to evolve organically. And forcing the issue on companies will just continue to enforce the Peter Principle. Or maybe worse.

The problem is multi-faceted but primarily stems, in my opinion, to a lack of access to educational opportunities to people of color and a lack of supporting women and others in the tech and sciences programs. This is not going to be an easy fix. It’ll likely take decades.

So as much as we should encourage companies to support diversity and make it a core value, the fact of the matter is that as a shareholder, I am more interested in making sure the most competent candidate is elevated to the position rather than trying to support some ideological ideal.

Diversity will come when our core cultural values embrace it, which sadly is still a slow process.

Incidentally, my favorite female presenter at WWDC 2017 was Vera Carr. In fact, she’s been my favorite female presenter at WWDC is recent memory. That includes the crowd favorite Bozoma Saint John who seemed stilted and forced, although competent at last years WWDC.
