There’s an interesting Reddit thread from an alleged Foxconn insider. Really, it seems that this person acts as an intermediary between real Foxconn insiders and analyst groups. They buy info from folks in the know and sell it to folks like KGI’s Ming-Chi Kuo. At least that’s my interpretation from reading the thread.
Ming-Chi Kuo has a pretty good account from what I’ve heard. I don’t pay much attention to Apple rumors except as distraction and entertainment.
But something that I thought that was interesting was regarding the iPhone 8. There’ve been some rumors around feeding the rumor mill that the iPhone 8 could have a rear touch sensor ID. This Foxconn insider apparently says that will not be the case.
Honestly, I’d be surprised if Apple did anything like that. It would seem very un-Apple like. I prefer touch ID on the front. There can be arguments made for it to be on the back, but I don’t think that’s the best approach. If your phone is facing upwards and on a table, then you have to pick it up in order to unlock it. If it’s in your pocket and you just want to see the time without unlocking, there’s a greater chance you will unlock.
And look how the otherwise beautiful Samsung S8 fucked up the touch sensor by putting it next to the camera on the back. Samsung might not give a shit about the finer details of design and hardware development, but Apple sure as hell does. And putting the touch ID on the back just so you can have a better screen aspect ratio on the front is a cheap cop out.
I’d see Apple trying to put it under the glass front. Failing that, maybe on the side, integrated with the power button. But we’ll see won’t we.
How you like them Apples!
