I want a real relationship; not a facebook one
So many people are on Facebook nowadays and it is becoming a more important way for tech savvy folks to stay in touch with each other. But more than that it has become the most or second most visited website on the internet.
And as our families have dispersed across countries and cities it has become a legitimate way to connect with each other. Now, thanks to Skype you can use video chat on facebook. I’m going to show you how you can video chat on facebook with friends and family.
Living lightly and minimally is partly about keeping our expenses down and Skype has been great for that historically as it is free to use from computer to computer.
There was also G Talk or Google video chat but that doesn’t seem to be as popular. If you’re not on facebook then regular ol’ Skype will work like a charm. If you are on facebook and most of the important people in your life are as well, then why bother with having to open up another software application like Skype when you can use it right where you are in facebook.
How can I video chat on facebook?
Super easy. There are only 3 steps involved if you haven’t already used facebook’s video chat before. You’ll need to do this one time setup if you try and call a friend for the first time or even if they try to call you the first time.
Here’s how to call a friend:
- Click on the “cog” icon/”settings” icon which is at the top of their profile. From the drop down menu click “call”.
- Click on the “setup” button when prompted to set up video calling on your browser.
- Once you’ve completed the setup, your call should connect automagically. If it doesn’t you can now just call back.
Of course, for facebook’s video calling to work both you and the person you’re calling need to have webcams and microphones. That’s usually standard on most computers nowadays.
Also, you don’t need to have your friend there when you call. If s/he isn’t there you’ll be able to leave a video message.
The time and date of each call that you make is listed in your timeline, but the calls themselves are not saved or recorded, except if you leave a video message. And video calling with facebook allows you to multitask so you can continue using chat and the other facebook features while on the video call.
Let’s look at some of the more common questions about the video calling feature from facebook.
Which browsers does facebook video chat work with?
Facebook’s video calling feature will work with all updated Safari, IE, Chrome and Firefox browsers.
If I don’t have a webcam can I still use facebook video calling?
Yes. If your friend has a webcam and microphone you’ll be able to see and hear them, but if you only have a microphone and no webcam then your friend will only be able to hear you.
Safety and Privacy with facebook video calling
Who can call me on facebook video chat?
Only your confirmed friends can call you. And don’t forget that you can ignore any call that is coming. Just because someone is calling you doesn’t mean that you have to accept the call. It works just the same as your regular cell phone or home phone.
You can also personalize facebook video chat as you can with most other aspects of facebook applications. It can be difficult and complicated as facebook doesn’t have the best privacy policies and that is something you need to be aware of.
