‘For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, I was naked and you clothed me, I was sick and you visited me, I was in prison and you came to me.’
Then the righteous will answer him, saying, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you drink? And when did we see you a stranger and welcome you, or naked and clothe you? And when did we see you sick or in prison and visit you?’
And the King will answer them, ‘Truly, I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of these my brothers, you did it to me.’
~ Matthew 25.35-40
I was in the mall today and I was astonished at how many people were already out and about in a mad daze of dollars. A mad dash to dollar oblivion if you will. The malls were jammed packed with glassy eyed consumers looking through glassy windows at plastic glassy trinkets.
Don’t buy into the hype. Don’t be led like little sheeple by the wolves in shepherd’s clothing, leading you to the slaughter of freedom and autonomy. Step away from the doodad. Keep your wallet where I can’t see it. In your pocket or purse.
Buy Nothing Day is a huge event catered to support addicted spendthrifts as they try and deal with their addiction. A poverty of the spirit. However BND is catered to Black Friday. I want you to buy nothing for Christmas. And here are my top 10 reasons why you should just say no to buying stuff this Christmas.
Free yourself from servitude
Buying stuff is giving in to the opium of consumerism you’ve been smoking your whole life. It’s part of how the 1% keep the 99% occupied on unimportant things while they keep on pillaging and pilfering our lives and souls.
There is no way in hell you’ll ever get free if you keep putting on miles on the spending treadmill. They want you blinkered your eyes glassy and stoned on stuff. That’s how the shitstem works.
WWJD? Because it’s his birthday and he wouldn’t want it
Really? You think JC would be down with the assaults on each other and the robbing and mugging just so we can be first in line to buy stuff we don’t need to please the overlords who occupy our minds? Not likely.
Jesus the Nazarene sided with the poor. He lived simply and believed in equality and justice. He was left wing if there ever was a leftie. Love is how you show you care… not stuff.
Spend your time more wisely
The only non renewable resource we have is our time. 20, 50, 70, 80 maybe a hundred years on this beautiful planet if we’re luck and you want to spend it frivolously buying stuff you’ll end up throwing in the dump soon enough.
The greatest gift we can give each other is our time. It is a gift that can be used just once, that is how precious it is. Gift your time, not your dime.
Spend your money wisely
If you’ve never read Your Money or Your Life then I highly recommend you go out and buy it or better yet, loan it out of your library.
You might not think much about spending money so flippantly when you figure you make $20 or so an hour. But friend, when you’ve taken out the time spent commuting to work, your clothes and food required for work and other such items. All of a sudden you don’t look so rich and that hourly $20 is more like $10 or $12.
Save up your money to set yourself free. Don’t be a company lackey.
Make a profound statement about society
Choosing to buy nothing this Christmas is a profound statement that you can make at the individual level. It doesn’t require you to do much at all. You might even have a chance to engage in dialogue about the damage our consumerist society is putting on the environment.
Nothing challenges the establishment more than starving them from their source of power and fuel. Our sycophantic humble servitude and spendthrift ways.
Occupy Wall Street where it really hurts
Keep your money to yourself. Don’t go to the malls. Stay home and tend to your knitting. This is the kind of nightmare that keeps bankers and robber barons awake at night.
Imagine the malls empty. Imagine nobody spending money to feed the greedy serpent of Wall Street. See the ringing on the hands the pulling out of the hair of those fat bald white men in their pin striped suits. This my comrades is how we slay the dragon.
Free yourself from mental slavery
Bob Marley sang about it. These mental chains that keep us well oiled like cogs in the machine can be broken. You can learn to enjoy peace again and the quietude of silence.
Step out from the malls and into the wild places in our minds and spirits and physical environments. You don’t need a nature CD to enjoy nature. You don’t need Facebook and a computer to feel connected to those you love. The spiritual connection is deeper than any physical broadband connection.
Free your body from stress induced disease
Stress causes havoc on our bodies. We are peaceful beings that long to enjoy the quite times of nature with the rhythm of the seasons as our clocks and watches not the cacophony of noise from the 6 o’clock news.
Take back your own health. Stop buying junk food and eating at the fast food lanes to death in the malls. Come home. Cook a healthy meal of beans and rice. Something healthy, something tasty. Something nice.
Start enriching the soul
Start enriching your spirit and not the empty pit of avaricious businesses who don’t give a damn about our welfare as long as we’re spending as required.
Society is in a deepening spiritual crisis. A poverty of the soul. The only cure is to move towards a more just and equitable word and social system where everyone needs are fulfilled and nobodies greed is allowed to build.
The change we seek starts with the meek
We may see ourselves as the meek if we wish. It doesn’t matter how we view ourselves, the important thing is that we recognize the strength and power we have working collectively. At home alone, staying away from the malls, from the pending spending, we are united by a faith that the world we look for is being built as we wish.
It is not hard to refrain from spending. It is the right choice to move our world and our society forward to a kinder social fabric that keeps all of us warm.
Say no the robber barons and the faceless business entities that just want to chew us up of our fat and spit out our gristle and bones. Make a stand for something better and something morally right. Doesn’t matter if you don’t celebrate Christmas. Stay away from the appalling mauling at the malls.
Work yourself free from the calamity of consumerism. Let’s starting working towards justice and peace as the birthday boy would have wanted.
